Ruapehu Rocks!

A weekend of adventure at home in NZ…

Saturday saw us plodding along one of the rugged tramping tracks winding around the volcanic landscape that is Mount Ruapehu.  Tarn bobbed along comfortably on Andy’s back taking in the terrain as it changed from volcanic rock to sub alpine bush.  We have learnt (the hard way, I might add) that the key to keeping Tarn in tact on such adventures (and avoiding a melt down in the middle of nowhere) is to ensure he is fed and watered at all times, so with this in mind there were plenty of obligatory family ‘snap and snack’ stops to be had a long the way.

Sunday dawned an equally brilliant day with blue skies and not a breath of wind – perfect rock climbing conditions.  So we packed up the gear and headed up to the mountain in search of fun.  The first thing we bought for Tarn before he was born (well, second only to the Mountain buggy actually), was a tiny climbing harness…at the time we thought…wishful thinking?! But as soon as Tarn was roped in and clambering up his first rock face (really just a large bolder) we were elated…convinced it won’t be long before he’s old enough to show us the ropes!!!

The weekend ended with a leisurely stroll around our village with a dozy Tarn nestled in the buggy and the dog out in front, feeling a sense of “Aaaaaaahhhhhh it’s good to be home!”
