Packing up and moving on

9 April 2008
Melua Watson (Toddler)

Making the most of our last weekend with family and friends we ditched boxes for beverages and threw a whopping party, with chocolate brownies and live music under twinkling trees.

By 9pm most of the babies had been whisked away but one daring little chap was sound asleep in his buggy just metres from a blaring amp. His mother, an ace violinist and general music enthusiast, wasn’t at all surprised when he woke in a foul mood just as the band called it a night.

To top off a wonderfully loud and colourful weekend we had tickets to Chicago’s legendary alt-rockers Wilco at the Wellington Opera House.

My father had jumped at the chance to babysit Meg while he still could. Little did we know that she was to mount an official protest at each suggestion of sleep. Note to relatives – be careful what you wish for.

Back at the concert we got lost in life-affirming walls of sound, every bit as loud but far more enjoyable than a tired baby’s wailing. And for once I could see! The downside of jiggling in your seat at a sit-down concert is offset by being able to see more than the frontman’s eyebrows. Lights! Theatrics! Unusually knobbly knees!

Now with just two days to go, amidst the chaos of empty cupboards and cleaning, I feel like we’ve been given a lovely send-off.  But it’s not really good-bye - we’ll be back regularly for work, and have vowed to schedule in live music for as long as Grandpa is willing to do the honours.

Wow moving house with a baby! At least at one they are very adapatable and you are sure to meet new friends and support through the baby networks available. Great to hear you had a good send off and still manage to get out and enjoy your passions.
