Swap till you drop

11 August 2008
Melua Watson (Toddler)

40 people turned up to Gisborne's Poverty Bay Club on a frosty night, laden with bags and boxes of clothes. After dropping off their unwanted gear they enjoyed bubbles and cupcakes while all the clothes were hung up and laid out by a small team of helpers.

Most people came away very happy with their 'new' things. I got an amazing red dress with unusual drapery going on and a beautiful vintage shirt.  A more than fair exchange for the pile of guilt inducing clothes I no longer have to look at or think about.

The concept is so simple and would work just as well for kids. Kids clothes swaps would be a novel way to pass on all the gorgeous but  unworn clothes your kids have been given, in exchange for the next size up.

Swishing can be large and well organised, or small and loose - either way, a great way to spend a few hours with friends.  If you want to find out more about clothes swaps, check out www.swishing.org
